A dog who suddenly stops eating is usually telling you something is wrong. That is a vet visit, not a fussy phase. Real picky eating is more often a habit, built on treats, a bowl left out all day, and food that is not worth walking over for. Cut the extras and keep meals on a schedule.

Why won't my dog eat?

Start by separating two very different situations, because they need different responses.

A dog whose appetite changed recently is the one to worry about. Loss of appetite is one of the earliest and most common signs that something is wrong with a dog, and it shows up with almost every kind of illness: dental pain, nausea, infection, pain anywhere in the body, kidney and liver problems, and more. Nothing on this page substitutes for finding out why.

A dog who has always been slow and selective, but is bright, energetic, and holding a steady weight, is a different story. That dog is usually responding to habits that have built up around mealtimes, and habits can be changed.

Is my dog actually picky?

A few questions sort most cases out.

Has anything changed recently? New home, new person, new pet, a schedule change, or building work can all put a dog off food for a few days.
How much is your dog eating that is not dinner? Treats, chews, training rewards, and table food add up fast. A small dog can meet a surprising share of their daily calories on scraps alone and still look like they are refusing meals.
Is food available all day? A bowl left down means there is no reason to eat now. Dogs who free-feed often look uninterested simply because they are never actually hungry.
Is your dog losing weight? This is the line between an annoyance and a problem. A picky dog who holds their weight is usually fine. A dog who is dropping weight needs a vet.

What actually makes food appealing to a dog?

Dogs assess food differently from us. Smell appears to do most of the work: reviewing what drives food preference in dogs, researchers concluded that odour is the likely driver, and in one set of trials dogs ate more of whichever bowl they chose first in 89% of tests (Watson et al., 2023).

What to try first, in order

Work through these before you change foods. Most picky eating resolves here, and it costs nothing.

Rule out a medical cause. Always first.
Cut the extras right down for two weeks: treats, chews, and table food.
Set two fixed mealtimes. Put the food down, give it 15 to 20 minutes, then lift it. Offer nothing until the next meal. Most dogs adjust within a few days.
Add warm water. It lifts the smell and softens the texture.
Feed somewhere calm. Some dogs will not eat near a busy doorway, another dog, or a noisy appliance.

Then, and only then, consider the food itself.

How to introduce a new food to a fussy dog

Go slowly, over a week or two, mixing a little more of the new food in each day. Sudden changes can upset a dog's stomach, which is a fast way to teach them to distrust the new food. Keep everything else steady while you do it (same bowl, same place, same times) so you can tell what is actually making a difference.
