Feeding a Dog With Bladder Stones

The type of stone decides everything, and only your vet can tell you which one it is. Here is the finding that surprises people. In the biggest diet studies, high-protein and high-mineral foods were not the risk. The lowest-mineral, driest foods were. Water is the lever most owners overlook, and it is the one you control.

Everything depends on the stone type

There is no general "bladder stone diet," and treating it as one interchangeable category is how dogs get the wrong food. The two common types behave differently and need opposite handling:

  • Struvite: usually forms secondary to a urinary tract infection in dogs, skews female. Often dissolvable with a specific therapeutic diet alongside antibiotics for the infection.
  • Calcium oxalate: cannot be dissolved by any diet. Managed by removal, then diet to reduce the chance of it coming back. Skews strongly male and neutered, and toward small breeds.

Your vet establishes which by analysing a retrieved stone, or from imaging plus urine testing. Until that is known, a diet change is a guess with real downside.

The finding that runs against the intuition

Most owners arrive assuming a high-protein, mineral-rich diet must be the culprit. The largest dietary studies in this area found close to the opposite.

One study compared 600 dogs with calcium oxalate stones to 898 dogs without them. The dry foods carrying the most risk were the ones lowest in sodium, phosphorus, calcium, chloride, protein, magnesium, and potassium. Low moisture raised the risk too. So did foods that made the urine more acidic. Fat showed no link at all. Overall, dry foods carried more risk than wet ones (Lekcharoensuk et al., 2002).

The companion study on canned foods pointed the same way. Canned diets highest in protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, and potassium came with less risk. So did the wettest ones. The diets highest in carbohydrate came with more.

So "high protein and minerals cause stones" is not what the dog data shows. What comes up again and again is water. Most of the other risk factors have nothing to do with food at all: being male (odds ratio 7.77), being neutered (2.58), being a toy or small breed (around 3), and past bladder inflammation (6.49) (Okafor et al., 2014).

Water is the lever

Across stone types, the shared goal is dilute urine: less concentrated urine gives crystals less opportunity to form and grow.

Research in dogs has shown this directly. More water in, more urine out, and calcium oxalate crystals were less likely to form (Bijsmans et al., 2021). Simple ways to get more water into your dog: add water to the food, put bowls in several rooms, try a pet fountain if your dog likes moving water, and feed wet or rehydrated food instead of dry.

Your vet may also give you a specific urine concentration to aim for and check. That is a far better target than "encourage water."

Where AlphaPak fits: not where most people assume

This is one of the few conditions where the popular objection to a food like ours turns out not to be the real issue.

Our protein and minerals are not the problem. That is not us arguing. It is what the largest canine dietary studies found. The diets associated with increased calcium oxalate risk were the ones lowest in protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium. On those two studies, a high-protein, mineral-rich food sits on the favourable side of the association, and no association with dietary fat was found at all.

We are not going to turn that into a claim that our food protects against stones. It does not mean that. It means the thing people expect to disqualify us does not.

What genuinely matters, and what you can do about it: the one dietary risk factor that showed up clearly was low moisture, and that is the one you can change at the bowl. AlphaPak is a 5% moisture food fed dry. Rehydrated with water, it becomes a high-moisture meal, and increasing water intake is the mechanism with the clearest evidence behind it in dogs (Bijsmans et al., 2021).

So for a dog with a stone history, and with your vet's agreement, here is the honest position: what is in our food is not the concern. Water is. Dogs who form stones need to drink more, and a food you rehydrate before every meal is an easy way to get more water into your dog. That only works if you do it every time (it is a habit, not something the bag does for you), but it is a workable answer rather than a reason to rule us out.

The limits, stated plainly:

  • Stone type decides everything. For infection-related struvite, dissolution needs a therapeutic diet plus antibiotics, and substituting our food would delay real treatment. Get the type identified first.
  • We are not a formulated stone-prevention diet. Those manage oxalate precursors, urine pH, citrate and a target urine concentration together, deliberately. We do not.
  • High animal protein tends to produce more acidic urine, and acidic urine carried an odds ratio of 1.94 in a study of 452 cases. Your vet can monitor urine pH, and that is worth asking about.
  • Several of our vegetables contribute oxalate: sweet potato, carrot and broccoli among them.
  • This is a vet's call, not ours. A dog who has already formed stones is being actively managed, and the diet is part of that plan.

What to do

Get the stone type identified. That is the whole foundation. Ask your vet whether dissolution is possible or whether removal is needed, and what the prevention plan is afterwards. Ask what urine concentration they want you aiming at and how it will be monitored.

Then focus on water, because it is the part you control day to day and the part with the clearest mechanism behind it. And if your dog is a neutered male in a small breed with a history of bladder inflammation, mention that risk profile at check-ups even between episodes.

What should I feed a dog with bladder stones?
It depends entirely on the stone type, which your vet establishes by analysing a retrieved stone or from imaging and urine testing. Struvite stones can often be dissolved with a specific therapeutic diet plus antibiotics. Calcium oxalate stones cannot be dissolved and are managed to prevent recurrence. Feeding the wrong diet for the stone type can make things worse.

Does adding water to my dog's food help?
More water intake means more dilute urine, and dilute urine is the central goal in preventing most stone recurrence. Research in dogs has shown that increasing water intake reduces the tendency for calcium oxalate crystals to form. Adding water to food is one practical way to raise intake, but it only counts if you actually do it consistently.
Is AlphaPak good for a dog with bladder stones?
Possibly, served rehydrated and with your vet's agreement. The research does not support the usual objection. The diets linked to higher calcium oxalate risk were the lowest in protein and minerals, not the highest. The risk factor that did show up is low moisture, and rehydrating with water addresses exactly that. What we are not is a formulated stone-prevention diet, and stone type decides the plan.
Which dogs get bladder stones?
For calcium oxalate, risk is much higher in male and neutered dogs, in small and toy breeds, and in dogs with a history of bladder inflammation. Miniature Schnauzers, Lhasa Apsos, Yorkshire Terriers, Bichon Frises, Shih Tzus, and Miniature and Toy Poodles are over-represented. Struvite stones skew toward female dogs and are usually infection-related.
Can bladder stones be dissolved without surgery?
Struvite stones often can, with a therapeutic dissolution diet plus antibiotics for the underlying infection. Calcium oxalate stones cannot be dissolved by diet and usually need removal, with diet then used to reduce the chance of recurrence. This is exactly why identifying the stone type comes first.
