Freeze-Dried Raw vs. Kibble: An Honest Comparison

What is freeze-dried raw dog food?
Freeze-dried raw dog food is raw meat, organs, and produce with the moisture removed at a low temperature, so the food is never cooked. The result is light, shelf-stable, and easy to store. You add water before serving to bring it back close to fresh. AlphaPak recipes are single-source meat plus whole fruits and vegetables, with no synthetic additives.
What is kibble?
Kibble is dry dog food made by extrusion. The ingredients are ground, mixed, and then cooked under high heat and pressure, and shaped into shelf-stable pieces. Kibble is convenient and long-lasting. Recipes vary widely by brand, but many are built around meat meal, grains, or starch, and most add a synthetic vitamin and mineral premix.
How do freeze-dried raw and kibble compare?

Is freeze-dried raw more digestible than kibble?
The research says yes. In a study of healthy dogs comparing five diets, the kibble-style extruded food had the lowest nutrient digestibility, while the raw and freeze-dried raw diets were among the highest. Dogs absorbed 90 to 94% of the protein in freeze-dried raw versus about 82% in kibble (Geary et al., 2024). The more your dog absorbs, the more every ingredient counts.
What about high-heat cooking?
Kibble is cooked at high heat, which creates compounds like acrylamide and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). One study found that dogs fed dry food took in 2 to 3 times more of these AGEs than raw-fed dogs (Palaseweenun et al., 2021). Is freeze-dried raw safe?

Does freeze-dried raw cost more than kibble?
Usually, yes (by the bag). But cost per day is the fairer comparison, and it depends on your dog's weight and whether you feed AlphaPak as a full meal or a topper. How do I switch from kibble to freeze-dried raw?

Going slowly gives your dog's system time to adjust. Some dog people never switch fully and simply use AlphaPak as a topper. - Is freeze-dried raw the same as dehydrated dog food?
- No. Freeze-drying removes moisture at low temperature without cooking the food. Dehydrating uses gentle warm air, so it applies some heat. Both are shelf-stable, but they are made differently.
