Common questions
- Measure around the widest part of your dog's ribcage, and the base of the neck. Small fits a 17–22" chest and a 10–14" neck; Medium 22–27" and 14–20"; Large 27–32" and 16–23"; X-Large 32–42" and 22–30". If your dog lands between two sizes, take the smaller one — the EZ Fit™ straps take up the extra, and an oversized pack can't be cinched down far enough to sit still.
- Ask your vet for a number specific to your dog. It depends on age, build, conditioning and the terrain, and a healthy young dog in shape is a different animal from a senior. Start well under whatever number you land on, keep the two sides even, and add weight over several hikes rather than all at once.
- The saddlebags. On the 2-Piece they slide off with the EZ Latch™ system, so the harness stays on your dog and you can drop the bags at camp or use it as a plain harness on a short walk. On the 1-Piece the bags are sewn on. Everything else — the EZ Fit™ harness, the sizes, the included water bladder — is the same.
- The EZ Fit™ buckles latch down and the leftover strap tucks into rubber loops, which is what keeps them from working loose. If a front strap does slip, it's almost always because the pack is a size too big — recheck the girth measurement against the size you bought. Loading both saddlebags to the same weight also matters more than people expect.
- Water-resistant, not waterproof. It sheds rain and shrugs off a creek crossing; it isn't rated to be submerged. The sleeping mat and sleeping bag are the ones with a genuinely waterproof bottom.
- Yes — the packs carry a lifetime warranty. If a pack fails on you, contact us and we'll make it right. On top of that, everything we sell has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- Yes — a Kobuk water bladder is included with every pack. It rolls up flat when it's empty and fits the saddlebags. The double-locking top is there so it pours without leaking in the bag.

Good product
I like the harness and the fit, however; the front adjustment clips slip and loosen pretty easily and I have to tighten them multiple times a hike. If there’s any recommendation on how to keep them from slipping I’m all ears!

Great value!
Obsessed with our new pack! It fits my dog comfortably--he recently wore it for a 6-hour hike--and holds a ton. It was also half the price of any comparable pack we looked at. Oh, and we got lots of compliments on the color! Sizing note: my dog's measurements were right on the border between a medium and a large, so I went with a medium, and he still has some room in the straps.

So far I love the pack
So far I love the pack. Have not had it out for a backpacking test but tried it on my dog. It adjusted well and fit perfectly. I love that I can remove the packs and keep using as a chest harness looks very well Made.

This pack really fits our German Shepherd cross
This pack really fits our German Shepherd cross, 60 lb girl well. The saddle bags are big enough for a few days of backpacking. I love the quality of the pack. I still have to try it with weight in it and am hoping that it will be stable and not slide like our other packs do, when the weight is just slightly different on both sides.

Versatile pack and harness
This pack is great, it fits my husky well and he wears it happily. The ability to use it as a harness or clip on the bags makes it very versatile, minimizing the number of dog items around the house. The construction feels solid and durable. I will say that I threw the included water bottle away almost immediately, it's pretty flimsy feeling and the lid leaked upon the first test filling, not something that I'd trust bouncing around on its side while a dog climbs up a hiking trail - glad I didn't buy a second one to balance the weight, as I initially thought I might.

Willow has only hiked about 5 miles in this pack thus far
Willow has only hiked about 5 miles in this pack thus far. The fit and finish is quite satisfactory. It rides well and stays centered. It is single stitched and I would guess the fabric weight to be slightly less than 400 dernier. Her large sized 2 piece pack weighed 1 pound, 2.1 ounces on my kitchen scale. The zippers are a bit small. I can only hope they stand the test of time. The snap buckles are plastic and seem a bit flimsy compared to those on her old pack/harness which was a tactical style with MOLLE attachments and rather beefy buckles. The pouches are a reasonable size for weekend outings, but may prove a bit small for an extended backpacking trip. It is a good buy for the price. It has a front D ring attachment point which is what Willow is used to and what works best for her. I also like the webbing attachment points above the pouches which will allow her to carry lightweight but bulky items such as her sleeping pad and bag with a bit of creative strapping.

Havent used it on a hike yet, but i love the design of this dog backpack. It has the tummy strap which is essential for for dog as he can slip harnesses without it. I love how adjustable it is and the locks on the straps to keep them from moving. Paid extra for shipping and customs as I live outside of the US but definitely worth it.

All around alright
The pack and harness combo themselves were great! Not as waterproof as I'd have liked, but I figured I'd need to spray the seams with some waterproofer. The waterbottle that was included leaked badly though. Ended up unbalancing my poor corgi's load the first time out, so we ended that hike with me carrying it instead! It was free, so no big deal.

Great quality
Great quality, good service and arrived quickly. It will likely be next season before I get to use it for it's intended purpose.

Pretty good, front buckles loosen
I really like this pack. The medium size fits my 35-40 lb border collie well. The front buckles loosen while she walks, on both sides, so I think I’ll have to replace those. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with this purchase and look forward to future hikes with my dog! The free water bladder came with a broken lid, unfortunately.

Great Business Great Harness
This harness and pack have great fitment, durability, and usability. Fit better than more known top tier brands, detachable pack for when not in use, and great durability. On top of that the company really stands behind their product, and it's affordable. Best value!

Great pack
Wasn’t thrilled about the color options when I bought it but after using for 5 days backpacking it’s been so great for my dog I don’t care about the color, and it’s actually grown on me a little. But seriously this checks all the boxes and we couldn’t be happier with the purchase

High quality lightweight dog pack
This is a really nice dog harness, with construction and materials as good as other brands something like twice the price. Every detail is well thought out and executed, from the quick connects for the packs and clips to keep them from flopping about, to the locking adjustment clasps and lightweight die-cut foam on the main body. Seriously, a top quality item for generic box store prices.

Great pak
So far no complaints. I have taken it on two trips with my pup. Can hold lots of items in the pockets! Easy to convert to just the harness.

Well designed and our pup seems ok
We've had her out with the pack twice now to test it out. Once empty, once about 3/4 full. She mostly seems unbothered by it and good to go. We have a very minor QC issue on ours but not enough to really worry about, more an aesthetic thing. (I'm sure she'll make a mess of it regardless) The coupling mechanism for the two pieces takes a bit to get used to, however we've mostly go it now. I'd highly recommend this pack to anyone needing saddle bags for smaller dog as its so much lighter than other models.

Super Happy with Purchase
I bought two separate dog packs for both of my dogs as well as two extra water bladders for them to carry their own water on hikes. The packs are great, there are clamps on the adjustment points so they do not loosen as the dog runs, which he have had issues with on other packs. One of the water bladders we got was leaky but I emailed the customer support and got it replaced very easily. I would totally purchase from here again.

I liked them a lot! The colors and the adaptability of the on an off pack is perfect. However, the larger pack was a bit short on the front and i am going to have to adapt it because If I adjust it to avoid rubbing against the armpits, it restricts shoulder joint movement from the chest

Great, thoughtfully-designed pack!
This pack stood out as the affordable pack option with removable saddlebags and pup and I are very impressed! Since my girl is 10 months and still getting used to harnesses, it was important to have removable saddlebags to ease her into backpacking. The harness is INCREDIBLY easy to adjust ("EZ-fit" is spot-on!) and the pack remains secure very well. It seems like a very thoughtful, durable, and easy-use design and we can't wait to take it out on spring adventures. Thanks, Alpha Pak!

The Pros and Cons
Overall: I love the overall design of the pack and I have been really pleased with its function. I'm also extremely impressed with the price point for such a nice pack. Unfortunately I bought it less than a year ago, and the issue with the straps on the underside of the bag make think that the bag might not last more than a year. Would I still recommend this product over competitors like Ruffwear and Kurgo? Absolutely! To be fair, my dog is not gentle on backpacks and for the average day-hiking dog, this pack might last a lifetime. However, if you are looking to do some serious day-hikes or through-hiking and can drop the cash, I'd recommend the pack from Groundbird Gear so you can get something custom fit to your dog and can get something that can take a beating. However, this pack is what I'd recommend to the average hiker or beginner backpacker.

Awesome pack, but not waterproof
Bought this pack after reading reviews of another brand's much more expensive version where someone suggested the AlphaPak as a much more cost effective option. The order arrived quickly and is super cute. When I first tried it on, my dog froze and I was worried he hated it. However, as soon as we got to the hike, all was forgotten and he ran around super happy. Haven't gone on our actual trip, but this was a 16km 5 hour practice run and it worked great. It stayed on well, the pouches look like they will fit everything we need for a multi-night backpacking trip and importantly, pup seems to not mind it. My only complaint - the water 'resistance'. It was wet on our hike, from drizzling to full on raining. The pack looked like it was repelling the water, but at the end, the contents of the pouches were soaked. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains a LOT so we will definitely have to pack our supplies into Ziplocs before they go into the pouches to ensure they stay dry.

Love the Versatility!
I got a size large for my lab and it's a great pack and a great harness! I use it almost every day, mostly as just the harness for walks and short hikes and it does not disappoint! I love how easy the pack is to attach and so I can put it on right before she gets out of the car and take off right before she jumps in the lake. My only complaint is my lab is between sizes so I got her a large, and the third strap around her stomach is super long so I have to tie it up.

Great Value Pack
I've had the Pathfinder (size large) for a few months now and my Aussie has taken it on an overnight trip and numerous day hikes and neighborhood walks. Overall I think this is an awesome pack and a great value for the price. Pros: Good size pockets Excellent overall build quality I love the 6 point harness and the ability to put it on or off w/o the dog stepping through a strap Love the chest pad D ring leash attachement and rear handle type attachement Gear loops on top of pack are a great touch I like the anti flap loops on the underside of the saddle bags I like the attachment system for the bags to the harness. I love that the padded parts at buckles overlap for extra comfort and protection from rubbing. Cons: Limited color options I wish the anti-flap loops were lower on the bags and both had the buckle feature. Not sure why one has that and one doesn't I wish there was more reflective parts on both the harness and the bags The plastic pull tabs came off 2 of the zipper pulls almost immediately. Not a big deal and the overall build quality seems excellent but that was disappointing.

SO HAPPY - Finally a backpack that works for our dog!
I've tried all sorts of backpacks & harnesses for my dog and have never found anything even CLOSE to as awesome as this product! Ruffwear harnesses never seemed to fit my large chested rescue properly and we had to return their backpack after one trip once we realized that our power-puler is NOT ready for a back-clip quite yet. This harness fits him like a dream and has actually become what we use every day for our walks! The backpack attachment is also of amazing quality and great to have for our longer hikes & backpacking trips. I absolutely love the front clip on this and am really happily surprised with the quality of it - my pooch has put it to the test already and I've not once feared it would break on us! If you're wondering if this will work for you, I implore you to at least give it a try!! Customer service is awesome as well in case you order the wrong size like we did :)

Good but room for improvement
I picked this up as an avid dog gear junkie. I like a lot of things about it but there is some room for improvement. The mesh harness is nice. It fits well and adjusts at many points. I appreciate that you don't have to lift a dogs leg to get the harness on like a ruffwear webmaster or palisades. I don't like how flappy the straps are. The only thing they have is little velcro loops to keep them attached and when wet or over time these will wear. It would be nice to have the straps tuck in somewhere and not just flap around particularly near the dogs face. Ruffwear packs do a better job here. I like the quality of the clips and front hook for control. The pack to harness attachment is innovative but not easy to do when the harness is on the dog and took more time than other harness pack combos do. It may loosen over time though to make easier. The colors are slightly different in person but still fun. The backpack is smaller than I expected but that's not a bad thing as some of my other packs are much larger. I would love to see multiple size packs that would attach on the same harness in the future. There's a gap for this in the market. We'll see how it holds up but very cool.

Love these!
I am so happy with my 2 backpacks! They are made well, fit nicely, and look great!! I bought both the 1-piece and 2-piece for my dogs. They are both great. The 2-piece comes with a nice little water bladder and it’s a huge bonus to have a harness for other adventures! Can’t wait to use them!

Awesome backpack and harness!
We have nothing but good things to say about this backpack and harness. The saddle bags are big enough to hold the dogs warm gear during our cold winters, and switches to the harness only quickly and seamlessly! We use the harnesses almost every day, and love all the attachment points for the leashes. Thanks for such a great and durable product!

Great Backpack/Harness Combo!
The dogs have put this backpack and harness to the test so far, and its stood up to it! We love the versatility of the harness only or backpack because we don't always need the backpack attachment. Its super easy to add or remove the pack and the saddle bags have enough room for their warm gear during our cold winters here in Alberta, Canada! Thanks for such an awesome product!

Love the two in one pack!
This pack exceeded my expectations! I love the versatility of this pack. We just used it for a weekend of hiking and camping. One day I was able to fill the saddlebags with no issues and easy use. The next day the weather was really warm so we removed the saddlebags and used it just as a harness for the hike. I love that I didn’t have to pack/bring with us two different dog accessories but that they were there in one!
- Kathleen
Tough and durable
This pack is perfect, tough and durable! We use this backpacking in the southwest, usually Co, UT and Az and it takes a beating. Washes well, doesn’t hold on to stink. I can fit their pad, jacket, enough food and treats for the weekend. We also use this for water, as it’s been incredibly dry here. Perfect for 2 bottles, a leash and a bowl. It doesn’t slip and I don’t find myself constantly putting it back to center like other packs. And it’s a breeze to adjust easily. Thanks for a great product

So innovative!
So I have been on the hunt for a lightweight, easy to pack, versatile backpack for our pup for sometime. We have tried other brands but the weight distribution or durability of other brands never cut it out for us. This pack is so lightweight, easy to remove from the harness and is really durable. It has seriously checked out every box when it comes to what I wanted in a pack.

Best Dog Backpack on the Market
There are so many things I LOVE about this backpack. It takes a little time to get everything fitted, because the fit is super customizable. Once that's done, the adjustable straps snap down, so you don't have to worry about fiddling with it again. It is incredibly easy to put the back pack on, and I love that the front piece doesn't have to be forced over your dog's head-- instead, it all snaps around. I love that the pack is removable without having to take off the entire harness, because it makes resting on a hike much easier. The quality is definitely some of the best I've seen- everything is heavy duty and very durable feeling! I loved this pack so much that I bought a second one for my other dog almost immediately, even though she already had a Ruffwear backpack. This one is just so much better! I can't recommend enough. You won't find a better option.

Best backpack on the market
We absolutely love this pack. The attention to detail really stands out from the durable fabrics to the latch down buckles. We use these pack for both our mini aussies on all of our hikes.

SO convenient!
First of all, I love the option that this pack has both chest and back clips for the leash. Rooster (my 100lb. Yellow Lab) is a puller, and this harness is perfect for his level of excitement on any adventure. Secondly, the amount of things you can pack into the detachable packs is insane. Bags for clean up, a collapsable bowl, car keys... anything! Maybe even a towel for swimming... Which speaking of swimming, my dog LOVES to swim. I have about five seconds of “sit” before he goes crazy after he sees water... AKA just the right amount of time to pull off the packs and let the boy run. 5 stars!!

High Quality and Functional
I love this pack! So does my Airedale Terrier, Banner. It's easy to add and remove the saddlebags and just use the harness. It's perfect for our weekend hikes, as it's durable and simple to use while you're on the go. This is the best dog pack we've ever tried. Thank you Alpha Pak! You've got a couple of new customers for life.
